How do you disinfect pillows that can't be washed?

Your sheets go in the machine every week. Your pillowcase too. The pillow itself has been sitting there since you bought it, quietly collecting everything your face leaves behind.

For a lot of pillows, that's not laziness; it's the care label. Memory foam and latex genuinely can't take a wash cycle, and putting one through anyway is how you turn a good pillow into a lumpy, damp ruin.

So what do you do instead? More than you'd think, though it's worth saying up front that none of it truly sterilizes a pillow. The goal is reducing what's in there, not eliminating it.


Understanding pillow materials


Different types of pillow materials

 

Pillows come in memory foam, latex, down, feather, and synthetic fill, and each one has its own care rules. Memory foam is the most common exception. It's dense, it holds moisture, and it's the material most likely to say "do not wash" on the tag.

Latex is similar. Down and synthetic fills are usually washable, though plenty of specialty shapes aren't because of how they're constructed.


Why some pillows can't be washed

 

Water is the problem, not soap.

Foam absorbs it and takes days to dry through, and while it's damp inside, you're growing exactly what you were trying to remove. Agitation in a machine also tears foam apart, so the pillow comes out misshapen and never recovers its support.

Down clumps if it isn't dried right. Contoured and gel-layered pillows can separate at the bonded layers.

Once a pillow loses its shape, it's not a pillow anymore. That's why alternative methods exist.

Over months, a pillow collects bacteria, fungi, mold spores, and dust mites, all feeding on the dead skin cells, sweat, and oils you leave behind every night.

Dust mites are the big one. They're microscopic, they're in almost every home, and their droppings and shed skins are what trigger reactions rather than the mites themselves.

 

How it affects health and sleep

 

For most people, not much. For anyone with allergies or asthma, quite a lot.

Dust mite allergens are a well-documented trigger for sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, and night-time asthma symptoms. Mold spores can do the same. Some people also get skin irritation from a pillow that's overdue for attention.

If you wake up congested most mornings and clear up during the day, your bedding is worth investigating, and worth mentioning to your doctor.

 

Disinfection methods for non-washable pillows

 

Four approaches. Check the care label before any of them.

 

Sunlight exposure

 

Put the pillow outside in direct sun for a few hours on a dry day, turning it halfway.

The claims made for sunlight are usually oversold. UV does have some germicidal effect, but the real benefit is drying: dust mites need humidity to survive, and a properly dried pillow is a much less appealing place to live. Use it sparingly, since long exposure fades fabric and degrades foam.

 

Vacuuming

 

The most underrated method, and the one that removes material rather than just treating it.

Use an upholstery attachment and a HEPA-filtered vacuum, since a standard filter will blow fine allergens straight back into the room. Do both sides, slowly, and pay attention to seams and piping where debris collects. Once a month is a reasonable rhythm.

Sprinkling baking soda first, leaving it an hour, then vacuuming it off deals with odor at the same time.

 

Disinfectant sprays

 

Fabric-safe disinfectant sprays kill bacteria and viruses on surfaces, but only if used properly.

  • Choose an EPA-registered product labeled for soft surfaces or fabric
  • Check the contact time on the label, usually several minutes of staying visibly wet
  • Test on a hidden corner first for discoloration
  • Mist lightly rather than saturating, since soaking a pillow you can't wash creates a new problem
  • Let it dry completely, ideally with airflow

Skip anything scented as a substitute. Fragrance sprays cover odor and disinfect nothing.

 

Steam cleaning

 

A handheld steamer gets hot enough to handle dust mites and surface bacteria, and it reaches into fibers that sprays sit on top of.

The catch is moisture. You're putting water into a pillow that can't be washed, so it has to dry completely afterward, or you've traded mites for mildew. Work in short passes, then dry it thoroughly with a fan or a sunny afternoon.

 

Not suitable for most memory foam, and check the label regardless.

One more worth knowing: if the label allows tumble drying, 20 minutes on high heat with no water handles dust mites without wetting anything. Add a couple of dryer balls to keep the fill moving.

Cleaning is damage control. This is the actual solution.

 

Pillow protectors

 

A tightly woven protector goes under your pillowcase and stops sweat, oil, and skin cells from ever reaching the filling. Allergen-barrier versions have a weave fine enough to block dust mites too.

It's washable, it's cheap, and it means the pillow you can't clean barely needs cleaning.

 

Changing pillowcases regularly

 

Weekly is the baseline, more often if you sweat heavily or have oily skin. Cases collect the same residue that feeds bacteria and mites, and swapping one takes seconds.

 

Proper pillow storage

 

Spare pillows need a clean, dry spot with airflow. A breathable cotton bag keeps dust off without trapping moisture.

Never store pillows in plastic long-term. It seals in whatever humidity was there when you packed them, and you'll unwrap a mildew problem months later.
